The Abortion Wars in 2008

Jim Antle summarizes a few recent blog threads on abortion and the 2008 race here. Ross Douthat’s criticism of Andy Bacevich–Douthat thinks Bacevich doesn’t pay enough attention to abortion in making his case for Obama–is one of the threads Jim links to. My own response to Douthat is newly up at Taki’s Magazine.

Here is my question, Dan: Are you pro-life or anti-abortion or however else one would put it? I ask because my sense is that you are not and that it is thus no surprise that you would think the war issue should take precedence over abortion. But maybe that’s an unfair assumption, so I thought it best to put it to you directly.

I’m against abortion. The issue should go back to the states, and at that level or lower I favor bans or tight restrictions, whatever is effective and consonant with public order.

Also, in case “consonant with public order” sounds cagey, what I mean is that, just as police powers can be excessive in other cases of killing, they can go too far in investigating abortion as well. I’ll have to write at length about enforcement of antiabortion laws at some point.
