The Neocons’ Bid for the Pro-Life Movement

I have a new piece up at Taki’s Magazine in which I take a look at the efforts of neocons Ramesh Ponnuru, Joseph Bottum, and James Hitchcock to win over the antiabortion movement — and why pro-lifers should reject them and follow the lead of Ron Paul and Benedict XVI instead. Check it out.

I agree with you entirely on the failure of rights language to oppose abortion; if anything, it makes a much better argument for, and I tend to hear it from the pro-choice side instead.

That said, though, the reasonable conservative pro-life goal can’t just be to make abortion illegal; it also requires the kinds of cultural shifts that reduce the numbers of unwanted pregnancies. A reduction in promiscuity, the kinds of policies that make it practicable to have kids, etc. The mainstream pro-life movement seems to be much more concerned with the immediate future.
