GOP ’08: Conservatives Need Not Apply

Following up yesterday's post, my colleague Jim Antle's article on the GOP field for '08 is now up at The American Conservative's website.

For all the GOP's gains, the last decade or so has been a real setback for conservatives. A friend of mine, now an ex-conservative himself, was astonished when I told him the results of this year's CPAC straw poll; he pointed out that practically none of these top contenders would have been considered conservatives ten years ago, let alone desirable presidential picks for the Right. Of course, this year's CPAC straw poll was a "prediction" poll rather than "preference" poll, but in the mid-90s even a prediction poll would have yielded very different results.
